The beginning of 2020 started off with news of an outbreak of the coronavirus beginning  in China. The virus is believed to have originated from birds and fish in a market in Wuhan, China.

The first confirmed case in Arizona was in late January and although the virus is now prevalent in the north-west, it’s presence is felt at CHS.

   World Cultures students were supposed to be boarding a plane to China in a few days. Instead they will be heading east for Spain.

As the trip grew closer, airlines started to suspend trips to China in order to contain the virus.

“The U.S. Department banned all travel to China for tour groups because of the coronavirus, so when we needed to change tours we gave the option to the students and the students were the ones that voted. So the seven students who are going got to vote on where they wanted to travel to,” world languages department chair Travis Miller said.

   After the voting it was chosen to travel to Spain. The tour group will spend ten days there, going to five different cities, including: Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, and Barcelona. Although some were a little upset about not being able to go to China, they’re all trying to look on the bright side of things.

   “I’m looking forward to going and seeing all the super pretty buildings, I’ve seen pictures of them and now I get to see them in real life, we’re also going down to the beach in Barcelona, it’s going to be so fun,” senior, Jaden Bernhardt said.
